7 experiences in Japan that appeal to young travellers

JAPAN – A tap on the door and it swivels open.

We step in. A moat, a trickle of water. 

Wait, there is a hole in our path. A drawbridge is lowered, and we navigate a labyrinth that leads to a feudal Edo village. 

“What is this place?” whispers my 10-year-old child with glee.

It is a ninja-themed restaurant, enigmatic and slightly kitsch, where we are about to experience entertaining “ninja magic” over dinner. 

Japan houses a host of attractions that appeal to young travellers, as I discover in my journeys in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka with my family, including three children aged between eight and 10.

During the pandemic, Japan continued to roll out new attractions in time for the resurgence of travel.

With its abundance of one-of-a-kind themed cafes, quirky museums, theme parks, culturally immersive experiences and nature, Japan is a treasure trove for family holidays...
